Silvicultural treatments improve pest and disease conditions of white pine (Pinus strobus) residual trees and regeneration

چکیده
Managing multiple forest insect pests and diseases is challenging. For example, in eastern white pine ( Pinus strobus ) stands whereas partial shading high seedling density encouraged to reduce damage by blister rust Cronartium ribicola weevil Pissodes strobi ), dense conditions the understory may increase foliar such as brown spot needle blight Lecanosticta acicola Caliciopsis canker pinea ). We evaluated effect of silvicultural treatments, shelterwoods (residual basal area < 18 m 2 ha −1 low thinnings ≤ 14 patch cuts (1.2 openings), untreated controls on these pest residual overstory trees regeneration. Shelterwoods provided a good balance some reduced stem density, which resulted less disease severity. Crown condition quality regeneration was better all treatments compared unmanaged controls. Shelterwoods, have added benefit increasing seral habitat, resulting greater songbird diversity.

Epicuticular Wax and White Pine Blister Rust Resistance in Resistant and Susceptible Selections of Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus).
ABSTRACT Epicuticular wax on needles was evaluated for its influence on Cronartium ribicola infection of resistant and susceptible selections of Pinus strobus. Environmental scanning electron microscopy comparisons revealed that needles from a resistant selection of eastern white pine, P327, had a significantly higher percentage of stomata that were occluded with wax, fewer basidiospores germin...

Late Eocene white pines (Pinus subgenus Strobus) from southern China
Fossil records indicate that the genus Pinus L. split into two subgenera by the Late Cretaceous, although subgenus Strobus (D. Don) Lemmon is less well documented than subgenus Pinus L., especially in eastern Asia. In this paper, Pinus maomingensis sp. nov. is established based on a compressed seed cone from the upper Eocene of the Maoming Basin of southern China. This species is attributed to ...
متن کاملGenetic diversity and population structure of disjunct Newfoundland and central Ontario populations of eastern white pine (Pinus strobus)
The dramatic decline of eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.) populations in Newfoundland over the past 100 years presents an opportunity to determine and monitor population bottleneck effects on genetic diversity in trees. To provide benchmarks and indicators for monitoring genetic changes due to recent and future bottleneck events and to assist development of conservation strategies, we asses...

Conversion of low-qual i ty , natural mixedpinelhardwood ecosystems, containing a mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia L.) dominated understory, to more productive eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.)l mixed-hardwood systems is a common prescript ion on relat ively xeric southern Appalachian forest s i tes . We examined the ef fects of mechanical release, interspeci f ic competi t ion, and annual...
